First Wives Club: Coast Salish Style

This poignant and amusing collection takes the reader on ten unique journeys, through beautifully conceived and evocatively written stories.
Lee Maracle vividly depicts a variety of life experiences: as an Aboriginal woman, university professor, activist and a single mother. In one story, she writes unflinchingly about the grief and shame caused by a passively abusive marriage and the struggles of living in two worlds. Other narratives are funny and heartbreaking, laced by Lee’s poetic and eloquent writing style.

Lee’s stories describe the past and the present, and provide the reader with a sense of discovery. We invite you to sample some of her works.

  • In “First Wives Club,” Lee takes readers on an intellectual and sexual adventure. She looks into the humour behind aging and Native women’s sexuality. Juxtaposed with a traditional legend, this teaching story offers a deeper understanding of the author’s perspective.
  • In “Erotica,” the narrator opens her eyes to loving herself. “I want full banquet living, full textured life, with all its bumps, obstacles and fire,” she declares.
  • In “Goodbye Snauq,” Raven leads us on a journey into two worlds, giving us the author’s insight into Squamish ancestral history.
“The Café”—an explicit page-turner—is all about passion and heat.
